FALL 2004
AAS is
pleased to announce the following faculty hires for the 2004-2005
year: Susan Koshy (English and AAS), Lisa
Cacho (Latina/o Studies and AAS) and Junaid Rana
(Anthropology and AAS).
There was a fall 2004 AAS Open House on Tuesday, September
21, 2003 from 4:00-6:00pm at the AAS building, 1208 West Nevada.
All are welcome to attend and meet the Program faculty and
staff. Interim Chancellor Richard Herman delivered welcoming
remarks at 4:30pm.
October 14, 2004 AAS begun work on the new Cultural Center.
With the symbolic groundbreaking event, AAS and UIUC hope
to further diversity and multicultural understanding. For

SPRING 2005
Unseen
/ Unheard is the annual Asian American student conference
at UIUC. Celebrating multiculturalism and Asian Pacific Americans,
the 2005 event took place Saturday, March 12 at the Illini
Union. This conference is created by and for UIUC students.
AAS and the College of Law at UIUC hosted
a three-day conference focusing on Asian Americans and the

An interdisciplinary minor in Asian American
Studies is available. AAS courses are being established and
are now in the UIUC Timetable. For more information, see our

SUMMER
2005
AAS and The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies at the
University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign held a conference
and a workshop on The Asian Diaspora in the Americas at Urbana-Champaign
June 17-18, 2005. The conference included panels on Religion
in the Diaspora, Women in the Diaspora, Regional Variations
and Homeland Linkages, Music in the Diaspora and Literature.
The conference focused on diaspora as it intersects Asian
